Radio Lofoten on YouTube

The YouTube channel 'Radio Lofoten' is a virtual "radio channel" which exclusively features music made on the Lofoten Islands.

Much like one of the headline acts on the channel - Gravdal Gangstaz - "this is the sound of Lofoten".

As Norway's main tourist destination, the world comes to visit every year. And as global citizens familiarize themselves with the striking Arctic nature, many are curious of the islands' unique cultural expression.

It is this constant influx of global influences that gives the music produced in Lofoten a very international outlook - on the one hand.

On the other hand, the islands' relative isolation from the rest of the country and the world, has created a unique local cultural expression in the Norwegian language - particularly in the realm of rap.

The music produced in Lofoten comes in a multitude of genres, but primarily anchored in electronic music.

On the Radio Lofoften channel on YouTube you'll find English language-, Norwegian language- (but only in the local Lofoten dialect), and instrumental tracks in the genres: Rap, Trap, R&B, Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, Techno, Tech-House, Ghetto-House, Ghetto-Tech, Booty-Rap, Comedy-Rap, Rave, EDM, Dance, Pop, Alt-Pop, Traphall, Island Vibes, House Music and more!

You're invited to check out Radio Lofoten on YouTube, and leave your thoughts on the music produced in Lofoten in the comments.

Radio Lofoten - The Album

The most unique aspect of Radio Lofoten is the fact that it is home to all the music produced in the hip-hop sub-genre 'Lofot-Rap' (i.e. rap in the Lofoten dialect about the Lofoten culture).

For true hip-hop enthusiasts, it is of major importance that it was rap in the North-Norwegian dialect which realized the inherent potential in Norwegian hip-hop with lyrics in the Norwegian language.

When the rap group Tungtvann (from Harstad & Bodø) cracked the code on making hip-hop in Norwegian language in 1999, it took a mere two years before the sub-genre 'Lofot-Rap' emerged.

The album 'Radio Lofoten - 96% Nordnorsk Hip-Hop' (i.e. Radio Lofoten - 96% North-Norwegian Hip-Hop') features the 13 biggest hits from the Lofot-Rap sub-genre. The common denominator is that it is music in the Lofoten-dialect about the Lofoten culture, produced by locals from Lofoten.

However, musically it spans expressions from hip-hop to trap/R&B, gangsta rap, party rap, and ghetto house.
